Knit garment consumption calculation is the first step to determine the cost of production of that garment. In the techpack, a measurement chart and sketch of that garment are given that are used to find out the consumption of fabric. Carton consumption, CBM and thread consumption is also measured. 

But the consumption calculation system is different in industries than what we have learned in our universities. Here I'll discuss both.

This is the measurement chart that we are taking for example:

Consumption per dozen:


Body= [{(CB length+allowance)*(1/2 chest+allowance)*2*GSM*12}/100*100*1000]+10%

        = [{(44+5)*(34.5+3)*2*160*12}/100*100*1000]+10%

        = .78 kg

Neck band,


 First we have to identify the circumference of the neck band.
 

Circumference of neck band= (Neck width across*2)+neck drop front+neck drop back

     
                                             = (12.6*2)+5.8+1.5

                                             = 32.5

Now, 

Neck band = [{(Circumference of neck+allowance)*(neck band                         width+allowance)*GSM*12}/100*100*1000]+15%


                 = [{(32.5+3)*(3.6+2)*250*12}/100*100*1000]+15%

                 = 0.067 kg


Neck tape = [{(neck width across+back neck drop+allowance)*(neck width+allowance)*GSM*12}/100*100*1000]+10%

                 = [{(12.6+1.5+3)*(1.8+2)*160*12}/100*100*1000]+10%

                 = 0.0137 kg

Sleeve,

Sleeve length = Sleeve length from center back (CB) - (shoulder width/2)

                      = 28-(36.5/2)

                      = 9.75

Now,

Sleeve = [{(sleeve length+allowance)*(sleeve width+allowance)*2*2*GSM*12}/100*100*1000]+10%

                                    [here, one 2 is for sleeve circumference and another 2 is for one pair for sleeves]

           = [{(9.75+2)*(10+2)*2*2*160*12}/100*100*1000]+10%

           = 0.119 kg


In this way, consumption per dozen for a knit full sleeve T shirt is measured.


But in the industry consumption calculation is done a bit differently and in a rather simplified way.

Let's see how it is done:


Rule,


Body+sleeve = [{(Body length+sleeve length+6)/100}*{(1/2 chest+3)/100}*2*12*(GSM/1000)]+20%

Some assumptions,


Neck band= .25 kg/dozen (Approx)

Neck tape= .10 kg/dozen (Approx)


Here,


Body + sleeve = [{(44+9.75+6)/100}*{(34.5+3)/100}*2*12*(160/1000)]+20% 

                       = 1.032 kg/dozen

In this way, consumption of a basic t-shirt is measured in industries.
