 What is the meaning of GPQ?

  •  According to the H&M quality manual GPQ stands for “Guideline for production and Quality control”. But it is also known as Garment Process Quality or Garment Production Quality Controller.
  • The employee who implements GPQ in buying offices and in garments factories is called GPQC (garment production Quality Controller). But most of the time, that employee is called GPQ in short. So, by saying GPQ, we mean the employee who is implementing garments production quality (GPQ) in the garments. GPQC works in the factory but actually he/she is the representative of the buyer.


What are the things that a GPQ must know?


The work of GPQ revolves around garment inspection and reporting. So he/she must have a very good idea about:


  • Measurements of a garment.
  • All the types of measurements (like- measuring from high shoulder point or center back in case of a shirt).
  • Preparing a proper measurement report.
  • All the accessories needed for the garments.
  • All the potential styling mistakes.
  • Preparing a proper inline report.
  • Trim card making.
  • Regular follow-up of Production and finishing activities.
  • Managing buying QC (Quality Controller).

What are the qualifications of a GPQ?

  • Graduate in any discipline (preferably textile).
  • Fluent in English.
  • Very clear concept about different types of garment measurements.
  • Good idea about different inspection systems (like- 4 point system).
  • Good idea about measurement tape.
  • Know how to check and report garment measurements properly (method will vary depending on the factory).
  • Must have a good idea about different garment accessories and where to use which accessory.
  • Know how to make s trim card.
  • How how to properly check the quality of the garment.
  • Must know how to prepare a production progress report and follow up production regularly.


What are the responsibilities of GPQ?


GPQ (GPQC) works both in the factories and in the buying offices. They have different job responsibilities.


 Job responsibilities of buying office GPQ:


  • Understand what are the quality requirement if that specific buyer.
  • Follow up all the samples (development sample, size set sample, pp sample) and make sure that they are maintaining all the quality requirements.
  • If there is an issue, specify them down properly as comments and ask for revised sample.
  • If there is no issue, then let the factory people know that the sample is okay so that they can move forward.


Job responsibilities of garments factory GPQ:


  • Factory GPQ has to deal with multiple buyers, so he/ she must have a very good idea about all the quality requirements of every buyer.
  • After submitting the size set sample, if there is any correction, then the garments GPQ has to inform about that change in the CAD section so that they can change the pattern measurements.
  • When everything is ready, give the cutting order.
  • Regularly monitor the production line, check the quality of the produced garments, and make sure that they are following all the quality requirements.
  • When the garment moves from one section to another (like- cutting section to dyeing section to embroidery section), GPQ has to make sure that the sample is okay and following all the buyer’s requirements. Also check all the measurements of the garments, measurements of the print or embroidery, the dyed color of the garments is okay.
  • Constant communication with the buying office and give them current updates.
